I was very nervous about playing an Urban Meyer-coached team, and last night is why. At the top of the Ohio State - Alabama game thread I posted this gif:

He's the best fucking coach in CFB. And he's in the best fucking situation. Ohio doesn't have the local talent that Florida does, but Ohio State gets 90% of it. Plus, Urbz is able to pull guys like Dontre Wilson and J.T. Barrett out of Texas, and players like LB Trey Johnson from SEC country. Let's not even talk about the ridiculous depth the Buckeyes have at QB for next season.

What was most frustrating for me was watching a team play Oregon's offense, running Oregon's plays, and executing better. In essence Ohio State did to us what we've been doing to teams all season. It was hard to watch.

On the other hand, I also think that Helfrich is going to be a good coach. Even last night, the team made good adjustments and did not quit. Ohio State was just a better, more physical, more talented team than Oregon was.

I'd say there is a small but not insignificant chance that Mariota comes back - say, 20%. He'd be foolish to do so, but I think he gets paid no matter what so the risk isn't that great. Depending upon the outcome of the QB competition in the spring (assuming Mariota goes to the NFL), Oregon can win 9-12 games with the returning personnel. We certainly have fewer question marks than any other Pac-12 North team going in to spring camp.

I'm a disappointed duck today, but I'll take a walk with the wife and get some perspective or something.

The adjustments from 21-20 in the 3rd, to the final score of 42-20 were fucking amazing.
 
2/4 TOs were forced. Also, I think that Oregon gave Jones some shifts and looks where he actually started to look a bit rattled and he made a couple of bad reads. What fucking killed was, playing against a mortal QB, we would have sacked him 4-5 times on 3d and 4th downs, but Jones was able to bull through guys like Armstead and Balducci. For the life of me I can't understand why Barrett was starting in front of him.

It wasn't enough.

He looked rattled once. And shook it off to score 21 straight. If that turkey was rattled I'd hate to see him cool, calm, and rich ... QUACK.

You fail to mention how rattled Mariota looked ... put the Duck's in 3 and long ... and they play like a normal team.

It also helps to have enough team speed to tackle him on third and long.
 
I had this playoff dialed in. I actually don't think Helfrich is terrible and the Coker comparisons are misplaced considering the talent discrepancy between that Miami team and Oregon.

However, he was outclassed by Urban. Watch the pregame interview with Hannah Storm as Helfrich fellates Urban as he sits next to him. I knew it was over then and so did Urban. Just watch the body language.
 
Oregon was unable to stretch the field either vertically or horizontally.

Maybe if Nelson and Stanford hadn't have dropped those two passes, we could have used more up-tempo and it might have changed the complexion of the game. That said, they stacked up Tyner and Freeman most of the night, and without a credible rushing threat, well, Oregon doesn't win.

But still, ducks come out and drive it down their throats, then OSU gets lucky on a dropped pass, then it's punt, punt, punt, downs (or something similar). Oregon couldn't do much the rest of the game except go to the same skinny post route (which paid off once).

I also disagree about the forced turnovers. Every team seems to be fine with giving up a few extra yards in order to go for the strip now. OSU's receivers were carrying the football like a loaf of bread last night.

The two second half turnovers involved Ohio State players dropping the ball with no contact by Oregon defenders, but still.
 
Shit, Jones' fumble really reminded me of Jameis' - difference is, we were able to capitalize off of FSU's mistakes, not so much with Ohio State

Ohio State actually has a defense.

Oregon isn't used to playing against those because Pac-12.
 
After Ohio State beat Michigan State I posted here that Ohio State had as much right to a play off spot as Oregon. I was treated poorly for being so right.

Tony Kornheiser once again called Oregon the Virginia Tech of the west yesterday before the game.

Virginia Tech beat Ohio State.

There are no what ifs for Oregon. They are lucky they didn't lose as bad as they beat Florida State. Out hit, out played, and out coached.
