Tequilla, i generally respect your insight and take the time to read your mostly tl;dr posts, but if you've been on a team, you'd know how significant sports psychology plays a factor. Stoops failed tonight, no doubt, but this game is out of his hands.

Sometimes you get your ass beat and it compiles. This same Clemson staff got plungered by west Virginia 70-33 in a bcs bowl 2 years ago.

The smart money is on the guys who keep you in the conversation consistently and then you pray your 18-22 year olds get lucky and make plays to see you through.

Same logic has people running off Harbaugh when he's a top 3 coach in the world behind belIichek and carroll.

I guess what I'm saying is that at this point, if I was buying or selling Oklahoma football as a stock for the next 3-5 years, I would be selling the stock. In the last 6 years, Stoops has only had 1 1-loss season in the Big 12. The general momentum of the program is going in the wrong direction and the "mojo" in that program seems to be turning a bit.

I'm not saying that I would fire Stoops at this point. But I would also be monitoring the situation very closely in the next few years. Stoops has just completed his 16th year at Oklahoma. I'm not saying that it is happening here, but sometimes it's human to start getting a bit complacent and need new challenges.

In the 13 years from '02 to '14, Patterson's won 10+ games 9 of those 13 years.

I'm perfectly happy with my coach. He's faced some adversity and responded in spades.

I also fully expect that it will be 10 out of 14 years next year since they bring just about everybody back.

You should be happy with your coach. Gary Patterson is a good one. I will be surprised if TCU becomes the Big 12 power over Texas and Oklahoma. Texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State all had their worst seasons in years. I would bet any amount TCU won't win 43 games over a four year period. I'm sure there is a bookie out there who will happily take your money.

Switzer had a run of pretty cold years in the early 80s as well.

I don't think Stoops is going to crash and burn, but I also don't think he's going to ever get back to where he was from 2000 - 2005 either without some significant changes. TCU and Baylor have innovative offenses, and Texas is a sleeping giant at the moment that is building up big time recruiting momentum.

I think Stoops needs to tinker with his program model a bit and that doesn't include firing Venables, the Clemson DC, to hire your own brother as DC. How about that Karma!

Also keep in mind that the Mountain West during that period was a little better as it had both Utah and BYU in the conference. It wasn't a Power 5 conference, but also wasn't a dreck either.

During that 4 year period ('08-'11) they won games against Power 5 teams: Stanford ('08), @ Virginia ('09), @ Clemson ('09), Oregon St ('10), Baylor ('10), and Wisconsin ('10). Add to that 2 wins over Boise over that time period as well.

The gaps in TCU under Patterson have been very explainable ... I don't anticipate many more gaps going forward.

I said that the over/under for wins for this team this year was 10.5 and said that I'd be optimistic and go with 11 wins. I thought 12 was realistic if everything went perfectly.

The base assumption that I had was that we'd get competent QB play at the Price level to slightly better. That clearly didn't play out.

Get QB play at that level and we win the Stanford game, win the Arizona game, and probably win the ASU game. There's your 11 wins.

If I moved the goal posts (as you say), it's because there's nothing that really surprised me this year outside of the QB play - which wasn't good enough for most of the season. The biggest difference between me and many others was that I wasn't as quick to throw the QB problems on the current coaching staff as others wanted to. If moving the goal posts is understanding the difference between what I thought was possible versus what happened and not wanting to get the pitch fork out as a result, then I'm guilty. But it's not moving the goal posts to understand what happened and then understand where reality and your baseline assumptions diverged from each other.

Sure, in hindsight I would have preferred to put us at 9 or 10 wins. But I thought that this team had 11 win talent and I think the results this year proved that to be the case. 8-5 was about as bad as this year could have gone. I'm still very bullish about what I'm seeing out of this program and the implications going forward.

Looks like TCU is in the final 2 for a DT prospect that is a Top 10 national player ...

From what I can tell of their recruiting this year is that it's standard Patterson ... get some guys that are fairly sound that will fit with what they want. They recently turned a DT prospect that had been committed to South Carolina and he's their future Center ... which is the exact same blueprint that was used for their current center.
