Choate on the 2015 DL per Jood

Coach Choate has some high praise for Mathis, Dissly and Vea from this interview by Jood. We already knew about Mathis' intensity (he was distruptive in his limited playing time this season) and Dissly's intellect (how he was able to contribute as a no star recruit from Montana that no one gave a chance to), so I think the most significant portion of the interview was Choate's words on Vea.

[Vita Vea] has more physical talent than Danny does,” Choate said. “But he’s not where Danny’s at in terms of the reps he’s had and really understanding the game Danny does. So that’s the challenge for us as coaches, to push him in that direction.”

Considering how much of a beast Shelton was, that's extremely high praise for a 346 pound true freshman. I'm curious to see how they use him, Qualls and Gaines this season at the interior spots, and if Mathis fills in for Kikaha and Dissly for A.Hudson. I hope we're able to keep Choate for a long time considering how well the DL played this year compared to every season since probably Randy Hart.

I think the combo of Choate and Kwiatkoski coaching up the DL is a BIG deal, really hope they stay for a long time. The production they got out of all their guys this year was special.

SEC D-Line at Boise State. Enough Said on that.

I don't remember what the deal with Vea was. JC transfer? Does he 4 years remaining?

Vea redshirted right?

I think Vea was a late qualifier or something like that. He was supposed to be in the 2013 class, but didn't get in to whatever school he originally committed to. He then got qualified (special tutors?) and came to UW, where he then redshirted.

TL;DR version...he redshirted this year and now has 4 more years

Reading some of the quotes from Lake and Choate have my sweatpants tightening.

Looks like the off-season natty is off to an early start for 2015.

He was highly recruited early in 2012 as a 260 pound DE but wasn't making the grades and everyone cooled on him when they learned he would be a non-qualifier in 2013. He spent the year working on grades and became eligible, and the only school that really kept in contact with him was Petersen at Boise State and again when he moved to UW. He finished classes in 2014 (not to mention going from 260 lbs in 2012 to 350 in 2014) and joined the team this summer as a true freshman with 5 to play 4.

Edit: here's a thread on him when he joined the team back in July of this year:http://forum.hardcorehusky.com/discussion/11051/new-dl-vita-vea-joins-team/p1

This DL is going to be an absolute monster in a few years and it will go hand in hand with a deep secondary that is ahead of it because of the true freshman who played this year. The defense is missing a Chancellor type guy in the back end.

Hopefully Chris Warren commits and then you have Warren, Gaskin and DW leading a very deep backfield.

Petersen knows the team he needs to compete nationally. It's led by a dominating DL, a downhill running game and an accurate QB who protects the football. As I said, how fast he can develop QB and OL will determine how long it takes.
