China retaliates

Even if I were rich, I can't fathom dropping more than $300 on a watch.

Nice cars, boats, high end booze….sure, but not for watches.
Getting this back on topic somewhat, there are some pretty nice, Chinese watch brands like San Martin that you could pick up for under $300 on Ali Express. Not all clone watches, either. Probably not the case at this point in time due to tariffs, though.

Devil's advocate, what's a worse financial decision?
$300 watch that immediately depreciates to $20 and breaks every few years needing to be replaced.
Or
$15,000 that doesn't depreciate, easily liquidated, and lasts a lifetime

Setting aside quality, how they look, make you feel, etc. the value is there for me.
Like a portable savings account you can offload if ever in a pinch.

Bought my wife a Rolex it's the most unreliable watch ever!
Rolex holds secondary market value well due solely to brand recognition and every wanna-be 25yo needing it for their Instagram roll, so you could probably sell it and buy an Omega and have a luxury watch that actually works.

..or you could splurge on something even nicer like an IWC.
Nobody cares about IWC, and being nicer than Rolex is a bit of a stretch. I don't think any watch person would ever say that.
oh geez, buddy.
lol no.
IWC is objectively superior to Rolex in nearly every metric besides brand recognition. Omega too, for that matter.

I mean, most of those use Seiko movements now and are reliable. But yeah, not going to hold their value at all. Most people probably should not put $15k into a watch, even if it doesn't depreciate.
I hear that Rolex's also are great for money laundering, though. Definitely can be used as more than a timepiece. 🤐

He says this as though quality hasn't been a massive problem since moving supply chains to China.
In the case of luxury brands (really any product made in China from cell phones to golf balls) it's the IP theft. Run a batch of Dior bags during the day and then some at night outside of the production schedule and then sell them on the internet or to unscrupulous retailers. Ebay and even Amazon have a ton of ripped off copycat products being sold. Even US movies being shown in China are subject to self-reporting of movie revenue to share with Hollywood and just ask the dazzler with his mythical MBA how reliable self-reporting is in the real world. Buying Chinese stocks based on "reported" earnings per share, cash flow and balance sheet equity and debt is like buying Enron stock based on "audited" financial statements.
You can get a Rolex knockoff that looks the exact same, and made from the same materials, for a fraction of the cost.
I’m not a watch guy, but this is happening.
Super Clones are a real thing, some of the knockoffs are getting insane and nearly imperceptible from the real deal to the untrained eye.
Movement inspection, finishing, and materials are the tells required for these. Rolex uses 904l steel, 99% of other watches are made with 316l. Precious metal clones forget about it, they're garbage.
Even then you're talking 1-2k to feel like a fraud, I couldn't do it, would be like the heartbeat beneath the floorboards driving me crazy until I screamed "It's fake!"

I'll just take the opportunity to drop my Hulk in here because it is what it is

Great watch sex panther.
