Caple discusses the most important part of the team.

I honestly thought that Tupuo would make the kind of splash that Kikaha made when he arrived, or that Dissly seems to be making now. Hopefully this means the Everett native is finally showing up.

Occasionally we're hearing about Vita Vea and Jaylon Johnson, but one name that I haven't seen in the local rags - Greg Gaines. Kid is probably getting pounded by Charles, Tanigawa, and Christe, and getting in shape in the process.

My man crush on Caple will be complete if he continues with pieces like this.

The Formula: Push up the middle and Heat from the edge.

Passion, if you haven't watched Vea's highlight video, I suggest you do so. He's out of shape and probably 20 pounds overweight, but I will be surprised if he isn't a monster in a year or 2.

Good news about Tupou. I didn't expect much of him. Maybe getting a fresh start with a new staff is what he needed.

Dissley is a surprise. I know Mathis has been hurt, but I wasn't impressed with him last year. He looked fat and soft. Too slow to be a DE, too small to be a DT. Of course, a redshirt year should have happened.

Choate said McGary is raw, but has huge potential. He's massive and doesn't have much fat at all. However, if he's not figuring it out by mid season, maybe he should switch to OL. We could also use him at tackle.

I've seen it. If Vea has any motivation - at all - he should be an absolute terror.

Mathis is a bid of a head scratcher. He has all the tools to be an force as a Red Bryant-type DE, or a 3-technique in passing situations. Might be a work ethic issue.

Elijah Qualls? Elijah Qualls? Bueller? Bueller?

By the way, Evan Hudson was interviewed after practice Wednesday and identified a freshman that has impressed him thus far - Will Dissly.

Not hard to see that Dissly would be a player for anybody that knows shit ... he's clearly got a work ethic based on his background ... but he was a high caliber basketball player in HS as well while playing WR on offense ... if you have the ability to do that at a relatively high level that means that you have to have quickness ... place that kind of athlete on the DL and it's not shocking to see a kid that is able to beat OL off the ball, penetrate into the backfield, and cause problems.

Disagree. There are a lot of kids who fit that criteria that end up doing nothing in college. I doubt that will be Dissley, but it could. He's getting reps with the twos, big deal.

I did like Dissley though coming out of high school. Coming in at 6'4" 270 instead of the 6'4" 240 he was listed at in high school definitely helps.

Is this Dissley the new one star legend? I mean its been about 25 years since the last one

I don't get the Mathis-Red comparison. Two totally different body types there. I guess they both play strongside DE, but I think Mathis has far more pass rush upside. I would say that Michael Bennett would be a more appropriate comparison, as I agree with you that he could move inside on passing downs. Regardless, it's nice to see some actual talent on our DL.

Not to be all one star legend superiority guy but Nate Robinson was a 6 star basketball player at the Beach who played football as a hobby. The other guys are no Stan Empterman.

Being a one star legend is very exclusive. Its not scrappy Ty recruits. A legend is legendary

Its been 25 years.

These rumors of player development haven't been heard since the turn of the century. Maybe the fan base will like their players the longer the stay for a change.

Vea will step right in for Shelton next year. Qualls is doing fine. He has earned decent reviews so far and will be a good depth player. Mathis should have been red shirted. My guess is if Mathis sticks it out here he will be one of those guys who is good as a senior and we'll all think "he really needs another year."

The other thing about the DL is it improved noticeably at the end of last season but it went unrealized. Littleton, Hudson and Jamora all improved.

Too bad Vea probably won't be ready to contribute this season. The push from the middle is where further improvement can be made.
