Photographs emerged that show Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, attending a dinner with Putin and his then-wife, Lyudmila, in 2006. Prigozhin is seen leaning close to Bush's shoulder while holding out a bottle.

Bush said he didn't remember the encounter at the G-8 summit until recently, but he added, "All I know is I survived."

My hypothesis has long been that we thought sanctions and a few weapons and threat of even more weapons would be enough to cripple them quickly. When that failed, we got stuck and had to double down to avoid humiliation.

Probably right...for the short term.

Afghanistan helped break the USSR. This is magnitudes worse and has dire consequences for a nation already facing a population collapse.

What happens when the Chechens and Dagestanis start rebelling? Or when the CCP decides Taiwan is too costly but Outter Manchuria is just sitting there with over a million ethnic Chinese speakers they need to "protect" from Russian imperialism(actual imperialism at that)?

Moscow is more likely to be Cal in the coming border realignment than USC.
