As of January 1, 2024, the UK Armed Forces had a total strength of 183,130 personnel. The British Army was the largest branch, with 75,320 personnel, followed by the Royal Air Force (RAF) with 30,800, and the Royal Navy with 32,000. The UK Armed Forces have seen a significant decrease in size since their post-1945 peak of 871,700 personnel in 1952. The British Army is currently its smallest size in over 200 years, and is smaller than the armies of Romania and Bangladesh. The UK's military budget cuts have left the British Army struggling to support NATO, confront Russia, or fight a war.
