When you have a ref that has the pressure of a country, the country that you happen to be in, imploding around you if Croatia wins, then yeah great play I guess.
There was talk after the 2006 Cup of FIFA handing out cards for flopping in the box and they were gonna be serious about it. I guess that proposal landed in the round file.
That in itself is why Soccer will never be more than an afterthought in this country sans 1 month every four years. There's quite a few other reasons but that's the main one. And fuhggetaboutit if there's a year that the US doesn't qualify for it.

No, soccer sucks. It's a boring game. A bunch of little guys flopping around. You don't live in a little poor country that can't afford basketball gyms and football equipment so I don't get why you, or any American would like soccer. Obviously, not many do considering the US sucks at soccer and dominates in almost every other sport.
