Great coaches, championship coaches know how to win the big games. When their team is an underdog they can pull an upset. When their team is the favorite, they come through the vast majority of the time. Pete Carroll kicks ass in the big games. Urban Meyer has kicked ass in big games as a favorite and recently as an underdog. Don James upset Michigan and Oklahoma (I think we were underdogs) and plungered Michigan in the 92 RB.

And Chris Petersen is an excellent big game coach. He upset Oklahoma and routinely upset others in big regular season games. His dumpster fire first year at UW doesn't change that shit one bit.

Watching the pre game interviews, Helfrich seemed out of his element. I feel bad for the guy because things will only get worse for him. Maybe they lose with Chip but its probably a 7-10 point game and not 22.

He also lost to WSU, OSU, and UCLA when it mattered.

Not so sure about that. Kelly's ducks got boat raced by a lesser LSU team that was playing with a backup quarterback.

Totally agree with your comments regarding great coaches, and part of that is the talent and type of players they build. Pete Carroll is a guru at assembling great talent and coaching it up. The same was true of James and is true of Meyer. In retrospect, many of Meyer's teams had no business being underdogs, nor did many of James'. Carroll, Meyer and James are/were prolific at producing NFL talent, and the same has been true of Peterman. The underdog thing has a lot to do with stat monkeys who base their betting decisions on simple things like margin of victory, without diving deeper. Kelly and Helfrich's ducks have been talented, but they're not at Alabama, Auburn, LSU, USC, Florida, Ohio State, or even UW (under James) levels. They are more reliant on a system that helps them overcome talent gaps and allows them to plug in players and keep on trucking. They also execute at a very high level, and that is a credit to their coaching staffs. However, their system alone is not enough to carry them when they face fast, powerful, well coached teams, like the one we saw last night.

Anyway, all I know is our team won last night. Go Huckeyes!

So has Saban, so has Carroll, etc. Just last year, Urban Meyer lost the Big 10 championship when a win would have gotten Ohio State into the title game. Petersen lost some big games at Boise too, the Nevada and TCU ones being the biggest. I don't really look at it as Helfrich and Oregon choking. They ran into a better, more talented team that peaked at the perfect time.

In regards to Petersen, the jury is fully out. The big wins at Boise are nice, but Boise was rolling before Petersen was head coach and they look to be rolling now that he's gone. They have a winning program and they are typically the most talented team in their league. Petersen's task at UW is so much different that the Boise years are pretty much irrelevant at this point.

The thing I got from last night was that UW is so fucking far from being a championship team. You look at Ezekial and compare him to our backs. Their OL to the UW OL. Any of their 3 QB's compared to ours. Even Kikaha, one of our best players, looks kind of shitty compared to Bosa. UW sucks in every way compared to Ohio State, from the commitment to winning, to the coaching, to the talent.

Welcome to my last 20 years. 1994 the Huskies beat up the Buckeyes and the Canes. Physically pounded them. Since that time we have been bitch slapped and beaten by every great program we have played. Even in 200 we had to trick whip Miami at home and hold on as they ran it down our throat. Notre Dame, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma and the rest just punked our ass. Oh and 65-7. Then the Pac10/12 started in on us.

James took a weak ass program that lost to Bama 50-0 his first year to a stand off against
Bama his fourth year. Bryant called it the biggest improvement he had ever seen in a team.

If you just ignore the obliteration of Arizona and Florida State in the conference championship game and the Rose Bowl respectively, as well Michigan State which was touted as a huge game preseason, sure. Did he get outcoached by the best coach in CFB last night? Yes, yes he did. I'm sure Peterman would have kicked ass, just like he did against Okie Lite.

 
Bobby Bowden said he had to win a whole lot of little games to lose the big ones.

We should have won the NC in '94 and if we'd had DJ and no sanctions, we probably would've. That team was loaded—but we lost early to USC because we were not prepared. Then we lost to the Ducks and Lambo should have been put out of his misery on the 50 after that game. Once we lost that game, we gave up.

But we were fucking good and physical. It'll take a while, but Pete is a good coach. I'm not saying we're definitely going to get there, but I think downplaying Pete's accomplishments at Boise isn't really worthwhile. Those teams were physical and disciplined and our team under Sark was anything but that.

We wanted change, we've got it and now we have to LIPO. I'm with @HeretoBeatmyChest‌ fully. This year doesn't change shit.

Everything I hear (INSIDE SORE-CESS!) say we didn't play to strengths and played the wrong players on purpose. It was to show these mentally weak POS'es that the system no longer bends to performers. Performers perform all the time or they GTFO.

You think Cyler Miles, Troy Williams or Jeff Lindquist want to become Kellen Moore-level students of the game? Fuck no they don't.

KJCS will start next year and he's going to flush a ton of the roster...

If true, I feel a little better. I hope it's not an excuse for stubborn/bad coaching. Having Miles or any of the other QB's sit in the pocket and go through multiple reads isn't the best way to use them. I don't think someone needs to put on a headset to recognize that. Same with having John Ross stay outside at WR instead of moving your best and most explosive player around.
