Best Rock Album - 1971?

1971 is impossibly difficult to pick a favorite. Sticky Fingers and Who's Next are a dead heat for me, but gotta give the tie breaker to making Yella Piss.

And don't get me started on the stuff I had to leave off. Joni Mitchell Blue is my favorite record by a female recording artist, but not "rock" enough for this shit fest.

I know most critics consider IV as their best LP, but for whatever reason, I just don't listen to it that much. I think KISW burned me out on that one and I never recovered.

A jr high teacher I had let us bring music one day a week. I brought in Zep IV, and everybody complained when he put it on side 2...I still remember him smiling and saying “side 2 is where the good stuff is”...CSB

I had kind of a strange journey with the Stones growing up. They first came into my consciousness in 1989 with the big "comeback" tour for Steel Wheels. This was the first Stones album I purchased (on cassette and some shitty So Cal Sam Goody mall shoppe). From there I bought the live 1981 tour album which my mom said would be good looking at the songs. I didn't know at the time that they sucked live by then. By the early part of HS I had the Big Hits, High Tide and Green Grass mid 60's singles collection and Tattoo You. It was really until right before college when I bought Let it Bleed, where I realized what this band was all about. Sticky Fingers really blew the doors wide open for me with Dead Flowers and Can't You Hear Me Knocking?

I bought Made In The Shade (my 1st Stones album) when it came out as a comp contract filler...some hits, some unknown (to me), because I didn’t want to shell out for a double album “greatest hits”...it got me Happy, Bitch, and Rip This Joint, three of my faves to this day.

Depending on my mood of the day, I could have went with Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers or Rolling Stones. All great works. I agree with @RaceBannon, Who's Next is top 3 greatest rock albums ever.

Agree, and Betts isn't far behind. There has never been another act that I would regularly sit through 15-25 minute jams for.

I rhink Betts' solos start out a bit boring but hit highs that often exceed even Duane's.
