Good article. There is a major lack of connection between marketing and the fans and program itself. They don't understand the culture of the program and what makes a true UW fan, imo.
I will say, in their defense, there is nothing they can do about kickoff times. That is a tv issue. And honestly, so be it. Id rather have it the way it is today, than back in the day when 90% of he games were over by 4pm and you didn't get to watch any of them anyways because you had to watch your team. The more football I can watch the better.
A lot of this ... it's a lot easier to sell a winning product than a non-consistent one. Those of us that grew up with Husky Football, are alumni, and plan our fall afternoons around college football are going to be at the stadium rain or shine, win or lose because that's what we do. For the fringe bandwagon type, it's all about winning. And one thing about winning is that winning is what drives the next generation to be fans, strive to attend the school, etc.
The start times are what they are. Those flexible find ways to make the best of it and adjust accordingly. Those who aren't find ways to make excuses. Early start times lead to good weather, 9 am cocktails, and home by 5 for the national game. Late games mean full day of watching games in the morning and early afternoon, not having to rush to get to tailgating, more tailgating, more adult beverages, more abundance.
We can bitch and moan all we want about the tv schedule and how much authority that the networks have, but you can't have it both ways. You want to watch other games but others around the country want the same. Likewise, the networks pump a ton of $$$ into the AD that limit the donations and ticket prices the AD charge the alumni and season ticket base. You pay for it one way or another.
I'd be far more interested in seeing improvements in the in-game production. You have a large portion of people that would be very happy to see a college football game have a college football feel with the band, cheering, etc. You have another group (fuck off KJV) that want the noise makers, bright lights, modern music, and over the top loudness that caters to the today generation. The most important thing that needs to be remembered is that regardless of what direction you go, the main attraction is the game on the field. Anything you do that isn't supporting that needs to go immediately.
