2026 UW Roster - Offense

Ok honest question to a Hated Duck (yet HCH brethren):

Do you think the problem is and has been that all of the positives that came from Nike buying your Athletic Dept in the 90s are also the source of the negatives i.e. flying to close to the Sun and forgetting who you really are - which is a small community in a cool state and not "That team out West"? We make fun or Oregon winning the offseason, because you out-recruit us every year and it makes us jealous. But at some point, winning the off-season every year should eventually lead to winning the season. I know there have been some close ones (like when Chip Kelly changed the rules and forget to inform the rest of the country).

Indiana avoided this problem by doing it in all two years, so the country hasn't caught on to them like they have with the Uncle Phil fatigue that has gripped the nation outside of ESPN and Eugene OR.

Before you say it, we all know UW doesn't have either problem.
To quote Peterman, it's hard.

I don't think Oregon is doing anything wrong. That is, they're doing it the "right way" given the modern rules. Getting the best talent available is 100% what those SEC schools were doing. But now, the gap just isn't as big as it was before NIL and the portal.

What Cig did was unprecedented, by a large margin. It will be studied for years. Clearly, he and his staff are extraordinary coaches. But Cig also hand selected the best 13 players from JMU and wisely used the portal to get veteran guys to assemble one of the oldest rosters in college football history.

Looking back at the teams that have won since NIL and the portal, they've been old with a bunch of NFL guys. Washington in 2023 included. Michigan had, what, 17 draft picks? Ohio State brought back one of the most talented rosters in modern football, certainly since NIL, last year. Again, old guys.

This bodes well for Oregon next year. A bunch of dudes that were absolutely going to be drafted are coming back. Virtually the entire defensive line will be back. That’s unusual. Sadiq is one of the only studs who could have stayed but declared.

We'll see. Losing the last 2 years hasn't bothered me that much because the best teams ended up winning the natty. But losing in catastrophic fashion has most of us skeptical about Lanning's ability to win the big ones.

Next year will be a huge test. Assuming Moore stays healthy, we need to both make and play a lot better in the playoffs.

If UW doesn’t make the playoffs and Fisch isn’t fired, it is a further indictment of UW’s laissez-faire approach to athletics.

Fire EVERYONE!

Coleman and Mohammed were not that good.

Quentin Moore is an NFL guy? He caught about 5 passes, ever. Solid blocker but for fucks sakes...Littleton and Feeney.
agree on Coleman. never saw it.

not sure about Mohamed. he looked good when he wanted/had to. big powerful kid who cut and got upfield. A little like Mark Fletcher with perhaps more wiggle.

It’s going to be better because Demond is a talented QB and QB’s are often better when they have experience. I fully expected him to make a jump before his quick scandal and I still do. A improved OL will also help. There are question marks and by no means do we have one of the top offenses in the country, but it’s not a dire situation either. There is potential to be pretty damn good.

We won’t have to score 30+ points every week to win. We can’t have games of 7, 10, 13 etc. We have to score 20+ even in struggle games. I think we will have less clunkers this season than last.
Do you think they need to adjust the offense to better suit his talents? Or do you think he'll be better in the pocket with another year under his belt?

Jury is out IMO.

If Oregon ever does what it seems you want them to do (not recruit well), they aren't going to get any closer to a natty. Iron Law. Need the horses.

Truth is, Kelly wasn't a great recruiter and some of those Oregon teams were less talented than some of the current ones. Therein lies the other missing piece: coaching. I think they have a solid coach who is a great recruiter. Whether he is or can be a great coach remains to be seen. He has completely failed in two playoff appearances and appears better suited for winning games during the season.

If this were easy, everybody would have many natties. With all the advantages USC has, they've been in the natty wilderness since Pete and it had been a very long time before that. The natty is an elusive animal and nobody cares about #2.

Jury is definitely out. I do think some tweaks will be made to better suit him and I also think he will be better simply because he’s more experienced. I understand not wanting him to run a bunch to avoid injury, but he needs to use his legs more to his advantage. Sometimes it seemed like he only used them when getting away from pass rushers.

I also think the OL will be a couple ticks better. He got into a rut in the middle of the season and was not the same. He did not play very well after Illinois and when he did, it was Purdue. He is far from terrible, but he needs to be better.

I think that a moving pocket is needed. Sitting in a traditional 3-5 step drop from under center is a stubborn, be a pro, bullshit move by Judd when your super fast, 5’9” QB can’t see over the line. Get him in shotgun so he can read the defense, roll him to the outside, spreading the defense out. Allow him lanes to see through over the middle and lanes to run through if no one is open. Another gripe is that Williams doesn’t appear to be a great decision maker in zone read or RPO. Too often he hands off when he should throw, keeps when he should hand off or throws when he should have run. Not sure if it’s because he’s just not great at a quick process of the situation or if Fish and Lil’ Jimmy are just not good at teaching it because of their pro style offensive backgrounds. That’s got to improve. Lots of yards left on the table in the RPO/zone read game.

He’s terrible considering he’s making $5m or whatever. And you have to consider that part now.

agree on both the moving pocket and designed runs. regarding the latter, I'm hearing he's not terribly quick but I eyes tell me he's the most sudden athlete on the roster save for maybe one dude.

despite everything, I hope he does well but if he doesn't and shit rains down on him so be it.

Yep. Oregon won a lot with those 37 year old QB’s they brought in.

He lacks good instincts to take advantage of his skills. Either that or he’s been coached poorly.

So bet big on BYU to win it all every year?
I get you're being facetious about BYU, but they absolutely overperform given their talent, and have for decades.

With that said, I wonder how much it hurts them to have guysm take off 2 years of training plus having a kid and nagging gash at home?

Tradeoffs.

I don't believe they take two years completely off. They are lifting at a minimum.
