The Washington men’s basketball team will soon discover if it will play another game or if its season ended last week in the Big Ten tournament.
The Huskies are hoping to land a spot in the second-year College Basketball Crown, an eight-team tournament that’s expected to extend bids to the top two teams from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East that didn’t receive an NCAA tournament bid, as well as two wild-card selections determined by its committee.
The bracket will be revealed at 2:30 p.m. PT Monday.
This year, the College Basketball Crown will be played April 1-5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“That’s another step for our program, to go compete in a postseason tournament,” coach Danny Sprinkle said after an 85-82 loss to Wisconsin in the third round of the Big Ten tournament. “You look at what it did for Nebraska last year. I imagine that fed their offseason, and they had a tremendous year. So hopefully, something like that can happen for us in our program because our players deserve it.”
Last year, Nebraska won the College Basketball Crown and received $300,000 in name, image and likeness prizes.
The Big Ten sent nine teams to the NCAA tournament and Washington (16-17) tied for 12th in the conference with USC behind 10th-place Indiana and 11th-place Minnesota.
The Hoosiers reportedly will not play in the postseason, and following last week’s loss to Washington in the second round of the Big Ten tournament, Trojans coach Eric Musselman said USC’s season was over.
The Big Ten is not sending a team to the NIT, which announced its 32-team bracket on Sunday.
