UCLA Couch Sale

The '82 Washington-UCLA game was one of the best defensive classics I've ever seen

Classy dude. Waiting for our group to be seated in a restaurant in NB the night before my final wedding (he was waiting with his wife), he noticed a very large ring I was wearing, and came up and asked if it was a Superb Owl ring (it was not). Had a little convo, I paid my respects to him...After being seated, he sent a bottle of champagne to our table...RIP, CSB...Gritty Little Bruin

UCLA was a real program for much of his tenure. Had some great teams in the 70s and 80s. When the PAC 12 was tuff.

Their '82 team was 10-1-1, with the only loss being to Washington, 10-7

PAC 10 SWEEP rang out from the orange bowl January 1, 1985

UCLA beat the Canes in the Fiesta

USC won the Rose Bowl

UW won the natty

Donohue had a winning record against James. No USC coach did

But still James had almost the same number of conference wins with 2 fewer seasons at the helm. Still the best Pac 12 coach of the modern era, unless we want to go with Carroll.

I think James has the best blend of longevity and success that typically is associated with greatness. Pete was undoubtedly a better coach on a per game basis but look at somebody like Kelly - he was too, until he wasn't.

It's DJ (ILTCHDJ) wiff a bullet.

USC started a black QB in the 60's

And no USC coach other than Caroll can even approach that record
