Reporting from Washington
President Trump said on Tuesday that he did not believe Alex Pretti, the protester killed by federal officers on Saturday, had approached them as an “assassin,’’ as his deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, contended hours after Pretti was killed. “No,’’ Trump said, when a reporter asked him about Miller’s characterization.
But he went on to say, “You can’t have guns,’’ and “you can’t walk in with guns,’’ a reference to the fact that Pretti was carrying a weapon, which he had a permit to possess.
Many Trump supporters have taken a different view: the National Rifle Association and others have insisted that Second Amendment rights apply even in the case of protests like the one Pretti was at in Minneapolis. Some of Trump’s own supporters took weapons to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.
