True Dectective season 4

It's been entertaining/good to me because my expectations are so fucking low for everything original that they put out now. Or moreso the lack of anything they put out that's just a normal, entertaining murder miniseries.
Everything has been some uninteresting, left leaning show or docuseries for a few years.
Mare of Easttown feels like the peak. Maybe my 1b favorite HBO show. Been a steep decline ever since.
Nothing will top TD Season 1 obviously. I rewatch it every year or two. Just straight up one of the best detective/cult stories ever.
But this has enough horror and intrigue, and a great setting. I tried to rewatch season 3 about a month ago and couldn't get very far. Just a depressing piece of shit story and setup, especially if you've already watched the conclusion. Way worse than this.

The sex scene is episode 1 or 2 where the Alaska trooper was riding the dude was solid

Im still holding out hope that this season ends strong but it’s getting more and more supernatural as the season moves on which could just be a cover for having no coherent plot.
I think there’s too much side story shit in every season since number one. Number one it felt like the main objective was solving crime(s). Season three had that weird competitive shit between the detective and his wife and the book angle. Waste of fucking time.

Man I could pages on why I love season one so much and hate this one so much. Season 4 is more watchable than the mess that was two but might actually be worse. This one reeks of they gave the writer/director a master key and won't give any notes because of the BS which gave them the job in the first place. To be fair, I think they gave Pizzollatto to much freedom after S1 and that fucked up S2 but that was at least deserved.
A lot of the writing is terrible and the mystical magical realism bullshit is a crutch for crappy storytelling as it usually is.

The issue is that he spent forever on season 1 and it was his life's work so churning something else out in a few years was just never going to yield anything even close to that.
Think I remember that. It's been almost impossible to make good following seasons of shows that were created as one season limited series'.
Across music, movies, and TV we're seeing a lot of artists who I think put all of their best shit they've thought of since they started when they 14 in their first thing and then can't get back to that level. I think also seeing a lot of things where someone hits a grand slam the first time then they get blank checks to do whatever they want but turns out whatever they want is kind of muddled and confusing shit or self indulgent. Thinking Use Your Illusion I AND II and In Utero type stuff.
There was a TV show Heroes that fits this bill. I never watched it but heard season 1 was phenomenal and season 2 was Tyrone Willingham bad.

Westworld. Season 1 was god tier. Season 2 might have been the worst television I've ever encountered.
If I remember correctly season 2 of that show was affected by the writer's strike. Westworld a good example of a show that probably only had season 1 figured out then just tried to figure out the rest as they went.
The timing sounds right for that.

When season 2 of a show includes a scene in which a fembot kills a soldier by getting him horny and distracted during a gunfight between the soldiers and said fembots, I'm not even giving season 3 a chance.

This season had the bones to be good - harsh Arctic winter with a supernatural element to it. Jodie Foster is actually doing quite well despite being given an abortion of a script.
But that abortion is beyond saving. Beyond the convoluted mess that is the mystery itself and all the weak plot points that are supposed to somehow string it together, the entire tone of the show makes no god damn sense. Here we have six scientists freeze to death in horrific and unknown circumstances with suggested involvement from some kind of supernatural freak of a creature, yet no one in this town seems the least bit bothered. They might as well be investigating embezzlement.

I started season 2 and made it about 5 minutes into episode 1 before I was bored. I never started it back up.
Season three started with a hot chick cop in a conflict with a male cop because she wanted butt sex. That scored enough points with me that I watched and paid attention for most of the season. It eventually lost me and the last couple of episodes played out with me barely watching. I think they all died in the end.
Episode 5 picked it up and was better, and they probably could have cut out some filler leading up to it.
It's a decent miniseries by the standards of Sharp Objects, The Undoing, maybe a few others.
Max has thankfully and stealthily put out more Tokyo Vice to ease the letdown of waiting way too long for more TD.
