The real shocking numbers come when you look at the violent crime rates, rape, murder, assualt and you see how large a percentage of those crimes are committed by just 13% of the US population.

What's really wild is when you break down the 6% by the age group that commits most of the violent crime 16 - 40 and figure into that only a small portion of that age group population are violent criminals, you're looking at about 1% to 1.5% of the US population committing over half of all homocides and a huge amount of the all violent crime and robberies.

This is why locking people up and keeping them in jail for a long time has such major impact on crime rates. The number of violent criminals isn't that large and by someone's 20s we already have a pretty good idea if they are going to be violent criminals. Identifying them early and locking them up makes a huge difference in reducing violent crime.
