Seth Smith

Maurer's ceiling is a mid-late inning reliever.

Smith doesn't get you excited the way Upton would have.

Probably one of those moves that won't really matter.

I would have been happier if we would have traded Medina instead of Maurer ... still enough upside in Maurer to not want to get rid of IMO.

Maurer is a RP, they are mostly expendable
If you combine Smith's splits vs RHP with Ruggiano's vs LHP you have a really good player.
Quality move

The combination of Ruggiano and Smith is significant. If you just combine what each did vs. opposite handed pitchers in 2014 you have the offensive equivalent of Kyle Seager last year basically.
It's not that much different career numbers wise either. This is the kind of stuff the A's do, not flashy big name moves, but smart

Another thing that I like about this is that the Mariners have a number of bats that are in the 1-2 year away range from graduating to the big leagues. These aren't the kind of moves that are going to necessarily block a kid from getting up to the big leagues if he's ready. But it also provides a nice landing spot in that you can pick and choose how to break the young player into the lineup and give him a chance to prove that he's capable of more without being 100% dependent upon him being capable such that if it doesn't pan out that you are shit out of luck with a Plan B.

Yeah, Vlad's little brother, Wilson, and Kivlehan are all guys who should make the bigs around 2016

Does Petersen have a shot at making it out of spring training? I don't like depending on Logan Morrison to be the everyday 1B.

Probably not if for no other reason than wanting to avoid Super 2 status ...

I'm not against LoMo being the everyday 1B but I do agree that it'd be ideal to have another reasonable option as LoMo is probably best served playing 125-135 games in a season.

One thing though about Peterson is that if/when he gets to the bigs, LoMo can play some OF (as can Cruz).

Peterson making it to the bigs isn't a bad thing in the grand scheme of things and there will be room to fit him in.

Agree.
