Roster numbers - March 2021

New Fish
With the Bradley-Hiles add the roster is currently going to be at 86 (not including the super seniors) once the true freshmen arrive. It seems like a certainty that at least one of Osborne and Spiker will be leaving, likely both. There are usually a handful of couch sales/retirements before and after spring ball so it'll be interesting to see if Jimmy continues to use the portal to fill those spots. There could also be some late blooming HS prospects out west who are just starting their senior seasons now too. I just hope we don't go into the season with a bunch of spots open that we end up handing out to try hard walk ons.

First, a sincere thank you for putting this together ... it’s incredibly helpful

Some random thoughts:

QB is what it is and we’ll either need to bring in a 2022 kid or hit the portal again. I suspect we’re going to continue to leverage the portal hard for QBs at least in the short term. We have to hit a big name in 2023 and probably 2024 as well.

I’d be surprised if Newton doesn’t portal by this time next year. He’s going to lose touches to the 15th year seniors and likely going to get passed by younger guys on the depth chart. I also think Adams ends up as a DB.

Imperative that 2022 class contains 1-2 dynamic TE recruits because we’re full on blocking less athletic TEs. I’m really excited for Moore and what he may bring. I wonder if Culp is about to get passed big time.

I know we’re looking at big numbers on the OL in this class but we’re going to have decent attrition here just because of numbers ... some to the NFL and probably others simply for opportunity

WR is worrisome ... particularly if you assume that Osborne and Spiker are over this shit. Need to have some heavy classes in 2022-20/3 to cover. This is also a position where you might be able to leverage the portal some

DL needs another strong 2022 class and LB depth is actually pretty good.

CB is in really rough shape if everyone that can declare declares. I don’t see how we aren’t in on both HS kids AND transfers again next year. Safety isn’t as bad of shape and I like the young players we have there.

Latu is a soph not a junior

Isn't he technically a freshman since last year didn't count?

I think the way it works is that last year doesn’t count towards your eligibility cap. Latu used a year of eligibility in 2019, and was injured for a season that didn’t count anyways. I think he’s *technically* a true sophomore and could still feasibly redshirt a season if he got hurt again.

Latu played in 5+ games in 2019?

Pretty sure they controlled Latu’s games to keep him at or under the cap of 4

How many of those could be called contributors? 3?

Depends on your definition of contributor. Ty Jones was a starter but what impact did he have? Puka had as many nice catches as he had drops. Losing Garbers hurts because it’s nice to have QB depth but he didn’t contribute beyond that.

I still haven't fully figured out why the conventional wisdom has both Spiker and Osborne transferring. It would seem that both will be in the two deeps if Bynum, Rome, and McMillan are the starting 3 and backed up by Spiker, Osborne, and Polk. Taj Davis and Sawyer are lurking too though it's hard to imagine both beating out Spiker and Osborne for 2nd string.

Maybe I missed some scuttlebutt?

That outgoing list looks awful on paper, but the combined contribution of those guys doesn't add up to much. Only five of the eight played for UW (dismissing Sirmon and his single digit snaps). McKinney was bad, Jones was mediocre, and Nacua showed high level potential but wasn't consistent in limited games.

Molden and Taylor are the only standout losses.
