After the ABA folded the Blazers picked up Moses Malone, Maurice Lucas and Dave Twardzik.
Blazers could have had a young Moses Malone playing with Bill Walton.
Owner was a cheap ass and wouldn’t pay Moses Malone to stay.
Lenny Wilkins coached Blazers in 1976 and went to Seattle Supersonics as Coach the following year.
In 1977, Coach (Dr.) Jack Ramsey coached the Trailblazers to their one and only NBA Championship (Bill Walton, Maurice Lucas, Bobby Gross, Dave Twardzik, Lionel Hollins, Larry Steele et al) by beating Dr. J. and the Philadelphia 76ers.

So was Dan Issel. I saw him play in the Kingdome for Denver when I was a kid
Bill Walton was the perfect center. Best player in the league for 2 seasons. No foot problems and Bill would have won many championships and gone down as one of the best ever. That team played the best team ball I have ever seen.
Maurice Lucas was an asshole. Twardzik as well but no one was as bad as Lucas, saw that up close and person a couple times.
Saw Artis Gilmore in GI Joe's in Milwaukee OR decades ago. One intimidating dude.
That Seattle team a year later with Downtown and Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, Sikma, etc was fun to watch as well.
What do you mean by Lucas and Twardzik were assholes? Do you mean on the court or in personal life? My dad was friends with Maurice and I don't recall him ever being an asshole. He seemed like a really nice man. I recall Dave Twardzik attending church in LO but I didn't know him personally. He seemed like a pretty good man.
Been watching Lakers Tim on HBO. I really wish I hadn't been 7 years old in 1980. @RaceBannon I envy you and all that unshaved pussy you must have been rolling in from 1977-1985. I still put together a good run from 1988-2018, but that late 70's early 80's cocaine partying looks like pretty much the best shit ever.
Back in the day, the NBA was not so entitled or wealthy and the players were everywhere in the community. My first year at law school in 1976, the Blazers fall camp was at Willamette University in Salem. We would be playing pick up ball in the second gym while the Blazers practiced and then share showers with them. Moses Malone was 21 and a man among men. Still, skinny Bill Walton was a much better player and the Blazer owner was cheap and needed to off load Malone's contract. So he traded Malone to the Buffalo Braves for a first round pick in the 1977 draft. The Braves turned around and traded Malone to the Houston Rockets for first round picks in 1977 and 1978. That's how desperate the Blazers were to get rid of one of the great rebounders of all time.
