Just imagine what you could do if you were Putin and you had a trading account. After you've secretly massed troops on Ukraine's border, you short the markets then announce your intentions and threaten Ukraine. The markets react negatively to your provocation. After you book some gains, you then take a long position and announce shortly thereafter that that you're pulling back from Ukraine. The markets blast upward with relief, and you book additional profits. You can then return to Moscow and buy yourself a summer mansion in the countryside.
