“I’ve had worse games than scoring 31 points.” -Sark

Is he implying that he's done a shittier job before and this shit job is acceptable?

That's like if you were working in sales, your manager comes up to you and says you didn't reach the quota for the month and replying "yeah, but I've done worse before."

Reminds me of a college buddy who had no problem fucking ugly chicks when he got drunk. His justification was, "If I fuck the ugliest chick on the planet, then every chick I fuck after her will seem hot".

I have no idea if this actually fits the scenario, but I wanted to share that story anyway.

That actually sounds like a good plan to me. Which means its a really stupid idea.

Did Sark ever react differently than Don James would whenever he surrendered 50 points to a less talented team?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that all Sark said is "This is not who we really are". When in fact history would dictate is that it was who we really were....

He only gave up 50 once that I can find, a 52-0 blanking by Alabama in his first season as head coach.

His other bad losses:

LSU 40 UW 14 (1977ish)
BYU 31 UW 13 (1985)
ASU 36 UW 7 (1985)
UCLA 47 UW 14 (1987)
CU 45 US 28 (1989)
WSU 42 UW 23 (1992) - probably the 2d worst
