The problem is two fold.
1. We got Petersen after his prime. Not every good coach sustains their success.
2. He's a fucking idiot who is Kellen Moore obsessed. Everything on offense is about being cute and clever.
This.
The three main red flags I saw with Pete were this:
1) him saying he doesn't run "an offense" he only runs "plays."
If that's not subtle horse shit coach speak for "I view being cute as the most important element of offense" I don't know what is.
2) hiring Babushka.
Literally everyone else on his staff has a great track record. Our D-staff is a fucking all-star team. Pease, Strausser and Bonerphó have all had success.
Boosh was hired as a QB coach (stupid) with no track record and promoted to OC when Tedford fell through (what I heard; I could be wrong, of course). Putting the least experienced coach in charge of the most important position AND the head coach's area of expertise is a straight Sark move.
It basically keeps the HC as an "offense" coach and puts the HC in a mentor role as opposed to a CEO role.
3) The Kellen Moore references.
Basically showing that Pete is stuck thinking that the way to win is let everyone else take care of other Shit and then design a crazy complex offense for a cerebral QB.
He made Jeff look awful and I thought, "Jeff sucks"; he made Cyler look awful and I thought, "Cyler sucks", but when he made Black Power look like shit it gave me pause.
Browning "runs the plays" better than those guys, but he physically is not talented enough to play as a freshman. The fact that Pete doesn't see that (shout out to Kim G, "he looks like a HS kid") shows you he's not evaluating his QB on that dimension.
Browning has physical talent that says, "start me as a RS-Soph at the earliest". But we are trying our best to ruin him by abusing what's good about him and not letting him develop what's not.
What a nightmare.
The fact that we can all see it and he can't shows he probably sucks.
Unless he really self-evals we are fucked.
