Rutgers won the 1st ever college football game 6-4 over Princeton.
They got shutout 1 week later at Princeton to finish the season 1-1 and win the Natty!

Race was there! It was also the birth of tail gating where you would hitch the horse to the gate and eat and drink behind the row of horses (hence tails). You didn’t even have to pay to park your horse.

Ok, outside of Race being there I made the rest of that shit up.

This truly was a great moment in America history. All REAL Americans knew that rugby (hi @UW_Doog_Bot ) had lots of room for improvement , and that we could do much better!

The SEC took to football because the youths had gone soft with no war to lose anymore
Bama was the landed gentry.

Things were working great for the SEC until the Great Migration gave the North and Westcoast access to more descendants of slaves.
1969 and 70 were tough years for Bear Bryant. Nothing like losing in football to help good triumph over evil.

Scoring was low in those early years, because you were given the choice between tackling and shooting the ball carrier. Hence, there was no scholarship limit due to the high levels of roster attrition.

If a football game from the 1970s was shown today half the country would stroke out
Not saying I'm against a safer game. I've adapted. But the change is amazing
Jack Tatum killed a man and it was like - ok then nice hit, too bad

UT had 2 recruiting cycles under their belt by the time Rutgers heard of football and the cowards have been dodging them ever since. Rutgers may be the birthplace of college football but it was conceived in da norf
