I've been in parts of all five boroughs. The only place that was a huge shithole was the South Bronkxxx. It's a huge city so it seems like going by actual crime stats seems like the prudent thing to do (though I don't trust those now).
Parts of lower Manhattan had tacky weed shops every block and Times Square is pretty much the Tower Of Babel.

NYC is Wild. Richest of the rich. Generally pretty safe walking down the street in the super rich neighborhoods. Go five blocks away and you’re in a shithole. Even Harlem is like they. Main drag pretty cool. Couple blocks away - shithole.
Haven’t been to the Bronx but that place sounds like Mogadishu.
Interesting thing that I never thought about was when they responded to calls they had to roll extra units. Those units watched the roofs because they liked to throw things from 20 plus stories at the police. An officer was killed that way not too long before my visit. Poor cops were still saddled with .38 spl revolvers then loaded with 158gr RN ammo. They were testing 9mm's loaded with FMJ's at that time. Guys asked if I had a gun and I said of course (wasn't legal then) they said "good we don't have to loan you one." There guns looked like they had been dragged behind their cars for a while. No radios or shotguns in the cars wither. Why? Because they get stolen! All work done on portables.
