There is a dollar cost to derailments. Is it more than the cost to inspect hundreds of thousands of cars weekly? That's what the bean counters are figuring out. Ever since PSR precision scheduled railroading has come out derailments have gone up. Most minor so until East Palestine, nobody cared... now people are much more conscious about it.
