Lynch or Suh?

Since this discussion was all over the place today, what would you rather have?

Drop Lynch and spend a bunch of money to bring Ndingadong Suh in for a 5 year contract

or

Pay Lynch whatever he wants to keep him for another year in hopes that you can ride him back to the super bowl?

suh no question. Rbs die hard and though marshawn has another elite year in him, it will happen fast.
 
Rumor is the Seahawks are thinking of given DangerRuss a smaller ($15ish) per year deal, with every cent guaranteed over the length of the contract. This will give the team a lower cap number then if they go with something like $22.5 with only a couple years guaranteed.

 
If it's a straight either/or you take Suh without giving it a second thought. Add five years of Suh to the guys you already have locked in on that defense and you're winning more than one more ring.

But as @sarktastic noted, that's not the equation. Suh is going to command Wilson money if not more. Suh means no Wagner extension, no receiving upgrade, no offensive line upgrade, nothing.

I just don't see how it's at all realistic.
 
Straight up Suh, but I would be leery about giving a DT $15-20 million a year. If I could get Hardy at $10-12 million or Suh at $16 million, I'm taking Hardy.

I would take Lynch and Pierre-Paul over Suh too. If Lynch leaves they have to retool the offense and either sign/draft another big time RB or get some better WR/TE's. The OL isn't great either.

Lynch is vital to the team, but he probably only has a year or two left. Lynch is a freak of nature, but it's been proven many times that RB's die hard.
 
It's intriguing to think that Gurley might still be available when the Hawks draft at #31.
 
At this point we don't know how the cap is going to work out, what Wilson will sign for (and his cap hit), how much the cap is going to go up, or what Suh wants.

To me, the priorities are making sure that you get Wilson and Wagner on board for the long-term as they are the 2 QBs on the team.

Lynch is the heartbeat of the team ... so provided that he wants to play then you lock him in on a deal that makes sense for both sides. He's earned a raise and he's producing accordingly.

My guess is that they don't extend Okung so they need to be forward thinking on plugging that hole - I'm thinking you'll see a couple of OL in the draft to plug in as most likely they'll be losing Carpenter as well.

Obviously they need to find an upgrade at WR if possible, but I don't think that they view it as a priority. They have some internal options.

It wouldn't shock me if they traded Zach Miller in for Jordan Cameron - would give 2 strong receiving options at TE on the roster.

The other big hole is making sure that they adequately backfill Maxwell.

Other than that, most of what they are going to be looking at is finding ways to maximize and improve their depth.

If you can plug Suh in there without massively changing the ability to complete the other items on the to-do list, it's a no brainer.

This is a team that in all reality should be the 2-time defending Super Bowl Champions with the balance of the roster either in their prime or on the way into entering their prime. It's for the most part entirely locked up from a core perspective. This is definitely not a broken situation. The most glaring long-term issue for the roster is to be bled to death with their depth such that when injuries happen they have problems. You could argue that that's what cost them in the Super Bowl.

6 for $100 is $16-$17M per year.

To sign Suh, you'd be cutting Mebane - which is $5M in cap space. I'd expect that they'd cut at least one other DL as well as I think both Williams and McDonald would free up $2M in cap space each.

I think the numbers I was thinking about would have put the Hawks at having $15-$20M of cap space after signing both Wilson and Wagner and before cutting anybody, restructuring deals, etc.

If you can sell Suh on winning Super Bowls plus the benefits of no state income tax (not an inconsequential amount when talking about that kind of money), you might be able to come up with a package that puts you in the ballpark.
 
Suh is good and all, but the front office has proven they can find guys to play DL at an acceptable level. The defense doesn't need much.

The offense on the other hand needs a lot. The line is bad. If Lynch wasn't a beast, and if Russel wasn't an escape artist, they'd be exposed for the shit that they are. Upgrading WR sounds nice, but I'd much rather have an improved O-line so that they can still run the ball effectively if/when Lynch leaves/retires. Or protect the QB they are about to invest a lot of the cap into.

Suh is an extravagance we (I like to say "we" so it sounds like I am on the team) simply can't afford.

Only problem with that logic is that Wilson IS an escape artist and in limited carries Turbin averages 4.0 ypc over his career and Michael averages 4.9 ypc. Not saying either are Lynch (so don't twist), but they'll find a reasonable RB or two to fit in whenever Lynch retires.

They do need help on the OL ... and I'd expect that they'll find 2 pieces in the offseason.

He'd contribute to increasing the ability to put pressure up the middle on the QB, limiting their ability to step up in the pocket, and making the outside rushers more effective. Moreover, the one way right now to beat the Hawks is the short passing game which requires the DBs and LBs to not have 100% confidence in the DL's ability to get to the QB by a certain clock such that they have to give up some room on those underneath routes. If you limit the amount of time that the QB has to get rid of the ball, those underneath routes become far more difficult to complete and get YAC on.
 
We don't really need Suh if Mebane and Jordan Hill come back healthy. I'd love to have 1 more year of Marshawn but he's already over the 2,000 carry threshold and turns 29 in April so I hope we don't extend him more than 1 more year (deal expiring after the 2016 season)...he's just that much closer to the performance cliff RBs suffer at age 29-31 with 2,000+ carries on their bodies.

Depending on what happens in FA, I'd like to see the Hawks select an OG, WR, LT (to groom behind Okung), NT, and CB (to help replace the pending departure of Maxwell).

Sure, but that's not a sustainable model for the offense. He'll get older, the wear and tear will start to add up, he'll lose a step, and then we lose an effective part of the offense: his legs. Too often the offense relied on Lynch turning a loss in the backfield into a gain, or Russel turning a sack/busted play into positive yards.

BTW, Turbin/Michael haven't proven anything with their change of pace/garbage time carries.
 
Mebane has to go. No point to paying a two down, run stopping DT 5+ million, especially when the team went 8-2 without him. Getting to the passer was a bigger problem than stopping the run.

Are Wilson's legs going to go in the next year or two? Sounds like the general talking head that questions Wilson's performance.

And regarding Lynch, you put a deal together that is consistent with his projected performance or you go short-term deals. If you work together, a deal can be found that is fair for both parties.
