It's the lowest in 38 years (when Carter was president) and it remains a problem. Welfare reform was nice in the 90's but it dumped a lot of people onto SS Disability (which, once people are on it, they never want to get off).

The first guy in the article has my sympathy as a non-union guy in pretty closed-shop town but he and his wife could move to a right-to-work state (Nevada?). Or he could work for Uber whenever he wanted to bring in some extra income while he continues his construction job search in spite of unionistas being the middlemen to most of those jobs.

As for the last couple, maybe they'll move back to El Salvador and try to make that outhouse better so that less of them move up here. Maybe they could start their own business and employ some El Salvadorians rather than working for a politico up here:
