This is a huge step in the right direction.
The self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) loophole has enabled companies to determine, behind closed doors, that their ingredients are “safe” without notifying the FDA or the public.
Many of these additives have never been tested for long-term safety, yet they’re in everything from processed snacks to beverages to even foods marketed as “healthy.” Studies have linked certain GRAS-approved ingredients—like artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, and preservatives—to gut dysbiosis, metabolic dysfunction, and even neurological issues.
Eliminating this loophole means more transparency, better oversight, and ultimately, a safer food system for all Americans.

Oh so the FDA had their own version of the FAA's "Let Boeing self regulate to confirm safety, surely this MCAS thing is fine"?
Of course something bad in the food supply doesn't kill you instantly like a stabilizer trimmed to push the plane's nose down when it gets bad data from a sensor, but it could over time create harmful outcomes. Those are a lot harder to measure unfortunately so am very curious what the measurements of "bad" will be.
