His recruiting sucked a year or 2 before becoming the head coach.

The only certifiably good closer on the staff was Petersen. Baker lived Petersen. Lake managed to win a long battle for some 3* guy who never played (last name Love, I think...maybe it was Kentrell Love?) then Petersen got more involved and that's when Gordon, McDuffie and Murphy came in.
Lake seemed to be a good secondary coach. He was meh as the DC and lazy as fuck recruiting the secondary once Pete left.

I'm pretty sure the fact he either sucked or didn't want to recruit for years is one reason the roster is so thin right now.
