Head Coach Jedd Fisch Press Conference: October 31, 2024

I listened to this presser a few hours ago but something just occurred to me. Toward the beginning Fisch says his players have been practicing in the dark and in the rain at 6PM and lovin' it. He's hoping for Husky weather on Saturday when the boys from SoCal are here.
Later on in the presser, some reporter asks him if he has seen example in his past of tough weather showing its impact on opponents. Fisch said maybe when like the Miami Dolphins travel to New England, but besides that not really.

I’m no Jedd apologist but you’re letting your disdain for Fish color everything he says to fit your feelings. If UW is practicing in the dark, wet and windy weather daily and USC is practicing in LA then that’s an assumed advantage for UW whether Fish has first hand experience coaching to it or not. That’s what he’s saying. DeBoer practiced inside Dempsey when the weather was poor and subsequently the rainy weather in Seattle never seemed like an advantage to the Huskies when he was here. I always thought that was weird. I take issue with a lot of stuff Fish says but this isn’t one of them. I’m glad he’s leaning into “Dawg weather” or whatever stupid name he gives it. Take every advantage you can scrape together when you’ve got a line that can’t block.

good reminder of one of my things I pointed out about DeBoer last year and the weather. I had heard any time the weather was remotely rainy he would go into the Dempsey and be whiny and it wasn’t a great scenario for him wanting to stay at UW with his offense. Then we played like shit almost any time in wet weather and got really bad weather luck in 2023.
I’ll take it as a rare positive this year if Fisch embraces the weather and thats genuine. Having a home field disadvantage was one the slight downsides of DeBoer.

I don't want Jedd over DeBoer the weather thing reminded me of just another reason I felt like DeBoer was going to leave.
DeBoer came from South Dakota though. I'm not sure how much whining he was doing. I don't remember him doing that but it's possible that you accurately recall it

This is anecdotal Twitter guy stuff but I do remember it specifically being about the rain and not the cold. For example, playing last year's Oregon State game in the monsoon or the off and on again showers like I think there was against Cal, ASU, and Utah last year and wet air versus the 2022 Apple Cup where it's just cold but dry. The cold/snow midwest weather stuff I think also gets overplayed in college because the seasons are over in November and Octobers and early Novembers there are actually more friendly weather wise than the Northwest.

Yes and you know what I'm saying. Being cold is different than being cold and wet, which sucks but is a right of passage for football in this region.

Jalynn Polk could literally not catch a pass in the rain at Oregon State, which is another reason that game was so close.
