I saw Apocalypse Now in a jammed theater, with some friends, all 18-19 years old. I had recently registered for selective service (re-started just as I turned 18), and the hostages were in Iran...Dolby Sound (you could feel the chopper scenes in your gut)...I don't do horror films, with all things considered, THAT was a horror movie for me. It made me realize that there were a lot of fucked up people walking around that had been there. I used to ask guys that I knew had been in Nam how realistic it was...some said much better, not as bad...others didn't answer, but you could see it in their eyes. I still watch it, and it still holds up, IMO

I watched Apocalypse Now when it was relatively new. Was too young and didn't pay attention and thought it was just weird.
Then in a HS English class I had to slog through Heart of Darkness (same story for those unfamiliar). I still didn't get it, so I watched the movie again hoping it would help me pass the test. This time around the movie was awesome. Now I'll watch it every couple of years.
The Jerk was a strong consideration.

Saw Apocalypse in high school. Had no fucking idea what was going on. At that point Vietnam was kind of a taboo topic while the country healed itself and before the full blown AIDS surfaced. But Kurtz was scary, surfing was cool and the tunes were solid.
