This is getting into a tough period of awesomeness. That whole Violent Femmes album is just a fuckin' banger from top to bottom and its difficult to vote against. I have to admit my ignorance as well because I thought that that album was a lot later than 1983. Also, if you asked me "which song would I not turn off if it came on vs. all the others" it might be VF.
I also have a hard time voting against Metallica from the 80s in any poll. But, Dio was a little ahead of his time and that album also was killer.

I thought it would be too boring to go in chronological order. Some folks are more interested in other eras than others and if I go chronological I thought I would risk losing attention space from some guysm.

Not necessarily the most virtuoso riff, although Andy was a technically gifted lead guitarist.
But it's incredibly memorable and there's no mistaking the song within a fraction of second.
And that's the goal of a great riff at the end of the day.
I ran out of room for Hit the Lights and some other.
1983 was a surprisingly strong year for this exercise.

Don't sleep on No Remorse and Seek and Destroy. But, let's face it - Kill Em All wasn't full of the "best". It rules for sure, but Maiden, Police and Dio and others were pros while they were up and coming.
@YellowSnow, it will be interesting going forward because any year that includes Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightening, or Justice are just exercises in wasting people's time. Master of Puppets, Creeping Death, One - Game, Set, Match.

This isn't a thing where I hate other songs or bands. But Master of Puppets is the king. It's a little like Smells Like Team Spirit, in the sense that I am sick of listening to it at this point with Stranger Things and all that shit.
BUT - go back in time. Puppets was a life changer.
Not sure there's anything more 80's than Def Leppard. Disappointed in @ukdawg for not helping his countrymen out here.

You need to go down to Hawthorne Stereo on Roosevelt and 63rd and tell 'em @YellowSnow sent you. Get a Marantz CD6007 player for $599 and then a basic integrated amp for $1000 and $1500 to $2000 on some decent floor standers.
IFL CD's still. All these hipster bonios that got into vinyl are silly and playing shitting records on shitty turntables. Vinyl whether it's clean used stuff with minimal wear or the best new pressings is expensive and good turntables aren't cheap and require a lot of maintenance over the years. CD's still sound great and on good gear will out perform lower end turntables and amps.
