They allowed Bellotti to stick around forever. He was very average from 2002-2006 so I won't give them credit for that.
 
Helfrich will be around for two more years at the very least as long as they stay over .500. You're Oregon. You're not going to get SEC coaches outside of Mississippi, Nashville, and Kentucky. I try not to be an asshole to the 10 percent of the fanbase that aren't Quooks, some of which hang out here, but Chip was a great find from an obscure place. That's probably the route you're going to have to go again.
 
Belotti had a good season in 2005, and he earned a lot of goodwill with the 2001 season and the Fiesta Bowel win. I have a huge mancrush on Gus Malzahn, but he's a Southern guy and he almost certainly would not be interested in the Oregon job, plus Auburn is serious about the footballs and will do whatever they need to do to keep him.

Bill's right, we need to look around for an obscure coach that can innovate and build on what we've got left over from Chip.

I think that step one is re-vamp the defense - push Aliotti out the door, give him a gold watch, whatever. Letting Oregon Fucking State run all over us was the last straw for me where he is concerned. If Helfrich can keep the team competing (and actually winning) the conference, maybe our Slingblade can grow into the job. Probably not, however... I'm afraid we are going to really suck next year.
