From 1953-1974 the tournament field varied from 22-25 teams. In 1979 it was expanded to 40 teams. A lot of good teams were available to make a quality tournament back in those days

I kinda think SMU got screwed worse than when UW won the conference and didn't get in. I like how the committee claims they've stopped paying attn to "what have you done lately" but seems to really despise first round conference tournament losses. Goes to show why more than a few coaches have been vocal on why they don't like them.
