It's fine to joke about how shitty they are.. but it's like the Podcast of Champions segment on Cal this week.
Cal is in a much shittier position than Washington.
But Cal kind of needs major college sports. Flagship school for a major state, just like Washington.
Washington isn't Cal, nor Stanford. They can't play that card and they know it. Cal can't even really play it. Only Stanford can kind of just say fuck it. And they still have a stadium to do *something* with even if it's a peapatch.
UW has to get with the program. It's not up to Cauce.
Stanford can do it because their Athletic Department is effectively self-funded through an endowment ... obviously not having ties to a conference and having a revenue stream doesn't help them but they could conceivably go independent, still maintain games with their historical rivals (non-conference games are still going to be needed), and not be completely screwed
Cal has attempted to shut major programs down this decade (baseball) and has a long-standing history of really not giving a fuck ... the ONLY thing that I could see keeping them mildly interested is that they owe a lot on the Memorial Stadium remodel
UW isn't going to pack up shop on its Athletic Department and desperately needs to ensure that they have a landing spot that allows them to operate their Athletic Department at least at a break even level ... add to it the outstanding debt on Husky Stadium and there is some sense of urgency (that said, I'm sure that they could destroy Husky Stadium and repurpose it pretty easily)
