They're still touting 8.5%, right? I have not purchased one item in the past month from a grocery store that's not up at least 15%. Would love for @EconomistDawg to tell me where this 8.5% number is coming from.

They tinkered with the basket of goods and services that the average Americans purchase which downplays, basic food products, rent and housing and utilities and cars and gas. Using 1981 methodology we are over 15%.

Grocery index inflation is almost at 30%.

Cpi changes what good it considers in the index and weights them differently over different years.

Tbf it should and needs to do this. Anyone buying vhs tapes these days?

No they aren't. But I never bought a VHS tape on a weekly basis. And when I did, the cost paled in comparison to the weekly grocery bill, gas bill, monthly house payment and my weekly dry cleaning bill.
