I've had this happen a few times. Rather than trying to figure it out and going through the effort, I just paid and moved on.
There was a time they said I owed $50k plus. I clearly didn't and it was an obvious error their said. Every call me it was fixed. 6 weeks later another letter with more interest added. It took an entire year to get it resolved.
Another time I revived a random $750 check from them. 2 years later I was told I owed $750 plus penalty and interest. WTF?
