According to Roll Tide Daily, the push was sparked by an incident with Gold & Kalen DeBoer. Gold did not like how DeBoer was changing everything with the program & he let him know.

I'd side with the coach on that. It's his job to succeed or fail his way
 
How badly did DeBoer want to leave Seattle/West Coast when they were going to concede on literally everything versus the new campus that is probably still lobbying for Saban to come out of retirement.

I think DeBoer is a really good coach who I was interested in seeing if he was great
I think he will win at Bama but while we celebrated 25-3 and a natty loss that's hot seat territory at Bama
 
that seems like a weird story to me. DeBoer is an asshat but he seems like a genuinely nice asshat who can get along with anyone.
Gold sounds like a dick. I mean, if you don’t want that whole life policy, just say so.
 
The biggest change Gold didn't like was the hiring of DeBoner to replace the most successful coach in CFB history. He knows a downgrade when he sees it.
